Depression is a very serious emotion that nearly 350 million people in the United States suffer from. It affects the way people see the world. Studies show that people affected by depression see the world as a dark and gray place, while people unaffected see it as bright and colorful. Everyone has their stories, whether they are happy or whether they come from deep inside people, the place where people bury their feelings, their soul. No matter how deep or depressing a person’s life is there are always ways to overcome it. She was 44 years old, which is pretty young for a citizen of the United States. She was the happiest person you’d have ever thought of, or so we thought. On April 2nd, of 2015, our beloved teacher and friend had committed suicide. It was said that she had hung herself due to severe depression. Nobody ever saw it coming, which shows how people can get really good at hiding their feelings. No one should have to live this way, there can be things done to prevent things such as suicide. If you are ever depressed or on the verge of suicide, our best advice is to go to the people that you love and care about (such as family or friends) and use them as support. Support from loved ones can travel so much farther than you know.
We used the power of photography to express how we felt about depression. In our photos, you will see that young teens can experience many challenging things, but the power of self-worth and friendship can bring you out of the dark. Masks are frequently used as stereotypes and ways that people can cover themselves up with and brand themselves by the things people say. The only way for you to truly overcome and defeat the mask is to be yourself and disregard the comments of the unfriendly and unsupportive. Find good friends who support and acknowledge you for you. If you are ever in a situation where you are having suicidal thoughts know that the suicide hotline is open 24/7!
